This is my first post here, so let’s see how well it works. I finished editing a script for Sam today (she’s the principal staff member showing off her car accident scars). There was a sex scene in it, which was interesting from a screenwriting perspective. How detailed should these be in script form? My instinct is to keep sex details to a minimum. How important is it, really, for the actors to have every grope planned out? For the director? I would guess that the actors don’t need much more than ”you have sex with this character, it’s pretty hot.” The director will have to have some things planned out in order to set up the shots, of course, but I think even here you have to sort of let the actors see what they can do.

I remember during school, one of my teachers told me that you would have to get specific with the positioning of both the camera and the actors for each shot. I’ve not directed one so I’m not certain how it is to bring a camera into what should be an intimate moment between two people, but this is what I was taught about it.
Darius! Good to see you posting on here.
I’ve found there are two schools of thought on this topic, and it depends entirely on not only the director but the writer as well.
The way I look at it is a sex scene is not unlike an action scene – the specifics will be blocked on set, and therefore you don’t need to write out every “ooh” and “aah” on paper.
However, if the sex scene includes something that is not only relevant to the plot (which evey sex scene should) but essential, then yes, a bit more detail and action is warranted.
